I'm a coach and have a few girls that are just not as showy on the floor as I know they can be. Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to bring that out of them? IE (smiling, getting into the music, drama) That kind of thing?

Thanks Tawni; I'm sure we all have some like this which is why I am hoping someone has a solution! I have re-structured my team to where beginning in April I wll only be teaching individual events and getting away from the "team" events. For a couple of reasons, but one is that this way the ones that don't want to give their all will only be hurting themselves, not the entire team! It is sad but I love the sport and I just want to teach it!

I mentioned in an earler post about asking the girls to turn up the volume of their personality ...explain to them that they need to project big so the guy at the top of the bleachers can see their smile. Showyness comes from a lot of self confidence and proud to be a twirler.. sometimes young girls havent a grip on that and maybe u beed to coax that out of them thru praise.
Individual is good, but i have found some girls just arent geared to be individual twirlers and are more comfortable as a team.. but i assure you, once they develop in skill level, and in age around 13, believe me the shy violets once only a team girl will break out... but thats been my experience

TEXTI know that i didn't have much confidence in myself when I was younger but once I got placed with older twirlers it all came out... And now I love to act and to play it up out there on the floor!! Also I recommend picking music that everyone enjoys and happy upbeat music that is familar. If it's something boring then you cant have fun with it!!

Thats soo true! Our team music for Regionals is a song that all of the girls really like and they try harder and twirl spunkier to it then our other songs.

Believe me! Almost all of my songs for my teams are pretty energetic and I actually let the girls help to choose the music. That way I know it is something they like. Some girls just don't have much showmanship!

Maybe they are just nervous. Maybe when they get us to performing, they won't be as nervous. Maybe you can have something like parent night, where the parents of a class come and watch what the students have accomplished that month. Maybe that will help them get less nervous.

ok.. I am a twirler and I had the same problem.. I would go through the parades and not smile and I wouldn't move my head or anything.... my coach sat and gave me a 15 minute talk...... it didn't work at first so she told me that if I didn't straighten up then she was going to kick me out.. yes it is mean but it worked.. now I am told that I am the best perfromer from the coach... I promise it will work.... try it... then tell me how if it worked...

Maybe you have a video of a performance (or you can make one), so that the girls can find out themselves how they perform. Some girls may feel that they are showy, but they just don't see it how it is. I sometimes divide my group in 2 or 3 parts (and than they've got to do the show as good as they can). One group starts and the rest can watch. When they have got to do their best in fron of their team-mates (peer-pressure) they definitely try to do their best. Maybe this will work
